During a child’s development, the spine, which houses a major part of the central nervous system, goes through changes that occur in three stages. Stage one, birth through age five, is possibly the most critical time for a child to receive chiropractic care. During this period a child reaches specific milestones such as holding their head up, crawling, and learning to walk which can induce minor traumas and repetitive stress injuries. Approximately 65% of neurological development also takes place during stage one and chiropractic care can help reduce the nervous system interference encountered after such occurrences.
Stage two, five to ten years of age, is when a child begins to venture out and become his/her own person. Playgrounds, organized sports, and the rough and tumble events associated with school age children can lead to musculoskeletal pain and injury ideally suited for chiropractic care.
The final stage, ten to fifteen years of age, is when possible permanent adverse changes can occur during spinal growth and development. Improper backpack use, poor posture, inactive or sedentary lifestyle, repetitive movements associated with reading, writing, and computer use, and sports injuries can lead to traumas on a skeleton that hasn’t ossified.
The health maintenance approach taken at Life in Motion Chiropractic and Wellness can help a child’s body overcome the stresses placed on it daily and allow them to function at their utmost potential. While certain case studies suggest that spinal manipulative therapy is a beneficial primary treatment of nonmusculoskeletal conditions such as ear infection, colic, asthma, ADD, and gastric disorders there is no solid evidence to support such claims and should only be considered as a complementary therapy to the accepted forms of treatment. Our evidence based approach will address vertebral hyopmobility and other associated musculoskeletal issues experienced by a developing child.
